It’s Village Hall Week

Organised by ACRE (Action with Communities in Rural England), the national champion for Village Halls, Village Hall Week provides an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the amazing contribution of all of the individuals who help to keep more than 10,000 Village Halls at the heart of their communities.

This year’s theme of health and wellbeing highlights the vital role that village halls play in ensuring that residents can remain fit and well by providing opportunities to participate in a range of groups and activities:

  • Physical Exercise: Classes like Tai Chi and Yoga offer people of all ages a chance to stay active in friendly surroundings, with activities tailored to personal needs.

  • Indoor Sports: From badminton to short mat bowls, halls provide a space for competitive and social play.

  • Dancing & Movement: Classes like the increasingly popular Zumba help to keep the community active through rhythm and coordination.

  • Social events: Many Villages Halls act as ‘warm spaces’ – giving people the opportunity to enjoy friendly company in a comfortable setting.  Originally a response to the cost-of-living crisis, perhaps the greater benefit is bringing people together and helping to reduce social isolation.

  • Health: Increasingly, halls are hosting regular medical outreach sessions or specific health programs. Many halls in our area have hosted sessions for blood pressure and cardiovascular testing—an initiative we are eager to expand.

  • Life-Saving Equipment: Many halls host a community defibrillator, providing a critical lifeline in more remote rural areas.

Village Halls – and the many thousand volunteers, Trustees and staff who support them play a vital role in keeping their communities fit and healthy, and are an essential facility for people to gather and meet with their friends, neighbours and members of the wider community.
