Our Mission
WERN exists to facilitate sustainable, resilient and inclusive rural communities where everyone can thrive across the West of England region.
We do this by encouraging and supporting locally-led initiatives, as well as drawing on this experience to make sure rural community needs are understood and acted upon by policy makers and service providers.
Founded in 2012, and a member of the ACRE Network, we are proud of our record. Over the years we have kick started various community projects and enterprises, developed a comprehensive network of village agents who help people live independent lives, provided advice and support for volunteers who manage community buildings, and reduced household energy bills through our longstanding fuel buying club.
Following the appointment of our new Chief Executive in 2025, we are developing a new strategy focused on working with communities to address key rural issues such as access to good jobs, services and affordable housing, as well as health and wellbeing. We are also keen to see how environmental considerations can be woven into this work.
